Grammatical Metaphor

C2 · Nominalisation presents an action or property as a noun concept: decide → decision, expand → expansion. It is a way to organise information, return to a previous idea, and discuss a process. It does not automatically make a text better, shorter, or more objective: accuracy, the visibility of participants, and the reader’s needs matter more than the number of nouns.

Nominalisation: making a process the topic without changing the facts

1. The process becomes the subject of discussion

In a verb-based construction, we primarily report who does what. In a nominalised construction, we name the action itself so that it can be compared, evaluated, explained, or made the topic of the next sentence. The grammatical metaphor here is not a poetic image: the event is grammatically presented as a “thing”, although it remains an event.

Compare The panel decided yesterday and The panel’s decision yesterday. The second fragment is not a complete statement: it needs a continuation. Nominalisation is not simply a change of ending, but a restructuring of the whole sentence. A noun can be the subject, object, or part of a prepositional phrase.

How to build it

who + verb + what → action noun + participants / object + predicate of a new sentence

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
object / O
—
Who or what an action affects: in I read a book, a book is the object.
noun
—
A word naming a person, thing or idea: student, book, happiness.

The board postponed the vote. This postponement gave members another day to read the report.

The board postponed the vote. This postponement gave members another day to read the report.

Postponement names an action already reported and makes it the topic of the second sentence; the consequence is directly asserted by the writer.

We discussed the expansion of the evening service.

We discussed the expansion of the evening service.

Expansion is the object of discussed. Discussing an expansion does not by itself prove that the service has already been expanded: the context determines the status of the event.

2. Word formation and the grammar of the noun phrase

Common pairs include: revise → revision, improve → improvement, refuse → refusal, discover → discovery, grow → growth. There is no single universal suffix. Some words do not change form: a change / to change, a delay / to delay. Check not only the ending but also the intended meaning: organisation can refer to the process of organising or to an institution.

After a verb is changed into an ordinary noun, its dependent words are restructured: expand rapidly → rapid expansion; examine the records → examination of the records. The article, possessive determiner, number, and preposition are chosen according to the meaning of the whole group. Do not combine the directly with the possessive determiner their: their decision, not the their decision.

Not all abstract nouns are uncountable. Two separate checks can be two inspections, whereas general increase is growth. Make the predicate agree with the head noun, not with the nearest word after of: the inspection of two lifts was, but two inspections were.

The gradual expansion of the service took three years.

The gradual expansion of the service took three years.

The adjective gradual describes the noun expansion. Of the service identifies what was expanded; took preserves the past time frame.

Two inspections of the bridge were completed in May.

Two inspections of the bridge were completed in May.

Two inspections means two events, so the plural form were is used. Nominalisation should not erase the number of separate actions.

3. -ing forms can also name a process

The ending -ing is not a sign of unsuccessful nominalisation. Comparing the results carefully takes time is a normal construction: the -ing group occupies the subject position, but internally retains verb complementation, a direct object, and the adverb carefully. By contrast, the careful comparison of the results has a clearly noun-based structure.

Noun forms ending in -ing are also possible: the careful handling of the samples. Therefore, the whole construction matters, not a rule that “-ing is forbidden”. Rapid industrialising can name a process, although industrialisation is more often the established term in the relevant text. An unusual collocation, a grammatical error, and failure to use a specific derived noun are different things.

For practical writing, choose a natural form and a consistent internal structure. If the task explicitly asks for comparison, that is the word-formation target of the exercise; acceptable comparing does not therefore become ungrammatical in the language.

Checking the figures carefully took an hour.

Checking the figures carefully took an hour.

Checking has the direct object the figures and the adverb carefully: this is a verb-based structure inside a group that functions as the subject.

The careful checking of the figures took an hour.

The careful checking of the figures took an hour.

Here checking has noun-like marking: the, the adjective careful, and of. Both examples are grammatical and preserve the duration.

4. Who acted, and what was the action directed at?

Nominalisation allows us not to name the agent, but it does not require us to hide the agent. If the agent is known and relevant to the reader, retain it through a possessive group, by, or a separate part of the sentence. The agency’s inspection of the site clearly distinguishes the inspector from the object being inspected.

Of-groups are sometimes ambiguous. The criticism of the director may mean criticism directed at the director; without enough context, the reader cannot always confidently recover the roles. For precise editing, name the critic and the target: the residents’ criticism of the director. If the agent has not been established, do not invent one for the sake of an active sentence or a clearer noun phrase.

An impersonal tone does not guarantee objectivity. The regrettable rejection of the plan already contains the evaluation regrettable. The rejection of the plan hides who rejected the plan if this is not clear from the context. Responsibility and evidential support belong to the content, not to the part of speech.

The residents’ rejection of the proposal surprised the committee.

The residents’ rejection of the proposal surprised the committee.

Residents’ names those who rejected the proposal; committee names those who were surprised by it. The roles must not be switched during paraphrasing.

The deletion of the files occurred overnight; the person responsible has not been identified.

The files were deleted overnight; the person responsible has not been identified.

The agent is genuinely unknown. Nominalisation is appropriate here, and the absence of an identified agent is stated directly.

5. Time, possibility, and negation do not disappear

A noun does not itself have grammatical tense. Past time, duration, incompleteness, or possibility must be preserved in the predicate and dependent words: the ongoing review, a possible reduction, the attempt to reopen. Check that the new sentence does not assert completion of a process that is still continuing.

Aim to, try to, and work towards describe a goal or effort, not a guaranteed result. We aim to reduce delays can be expressed as Our aim is a reduction in delays. Our reduction in delays, without other qualifications, may already present the reduction as a fact. Similarly, may reject expresses a possible rejection, not necessarily a rejection that occurred.

Preserve the scope of negation and the degree. Did not approve does not equal refused to approve: the second includes a deliberate decision to refuse. A slight improvement cannot be changed into a dramatic improvement. Do not infer a motive, cause, evaluation, or scale for the sake of impressive noun-based style.

The team is still reviewing the policy. The team’s review of the policy is still in progress.

The team is still reviewing the policy. The team’s review of the policy is still in progress.

The second sentence does not make review a completed result: still in progress preserves the state of the work.

The council may postpone the hearing. A postponement of the hearing by the council is possible.

The council may postpone the hearing. A postponement of the hearing by the council is possible.

Possible conveys the uncertainty of may. The agent, council, is retained; neither sentence reports that the decision has already been made.

6. Cohesion: name the previous idea accurately

This reduction, these changes, and that refusal can pick up a previous action and make it a known topic of a new sentence. This makes it easier to move from information already stated to new information. Repeating the key noun is often more precise than using this without naming what it refers to.

The summarising noun must match the previous content. If the team merely proposed changes, this implementation would incorrectly present them as implemented. If three different inspections took place, these inspections preserves the plural meaning. Do not call a neutral change failure or success if that evaluation has not yet been made.

The laboratory repeated the test twice. These repetitions produced the same reading.

The laboratory repeated the test twice. These repetitions produced the same reading.

These repetitions refer specifically to the two repeated test performances, not to an additional action.

The union proposed a shorter working week. This proposal has not yet been discussed by management.

The union proposed a shorter working week. This proposal has not yet been discussed by management.

Proposal preserves the status of the proposal. Change or implementation without clarification could prematurely present it as completed.

7. Connecting events does not allow you to invent causation

Nominalised processes are convenient to connect through followed, coincided with, resulted from, or caused. However, these predicates encode different logical relationships. After does not mean because of; simultaneity does not mean consequence; despite marks concession, not cause.

If the source information asserts only the sequence of events, choose followed or after. Led to or caused are appropriate only when a causal relationship has already been established. Even a grammatically flawless sentence can be an inaccurate paraphrase because it makes a stronger inference.

The release of the report followed the director’s resignation.

The release of the report followed the director’s resignation.

Followed reports the order of events. The sentence does not explain why the report was released and does not make the resignation the cause.

A fault in the alarm caused the cancellation of the rehearsal.

A fault in the alarm caused the cancellation of the rehearsal.

Caused directly names the reason. This combination is appropriate if the fault really was the cause of the cancellation in the source information.

8. Choose density for the reader, not for formality’s sake

In an analytical paragraph, comparison or reduction can help maintain one topic. In a short request, a verb often shows the required action more quickly. Please confirm your address and Please provide confirmation of your address are grammatical; the second option is not better merely because of confirmation.

It is not necessary to nominalise every verb. Long chains such as the evaluation of the implementation of the revision of the procedure may force the reader to reconstruct several embedded actions. Keep one useful process noun and distribute the remaining information. This is a limit on the use of nominalisation, not a general ban on noun-based style.

Before finishing, reread the sentence: is it clear who acted; what happened, is continuing, or is only possible; what relationship exists between the events; and why exactly this action was named with a noun? If the answer is unclear, return some of the information to a verb-based construction.

Please attach the receipt before you send the form.

Please attach the receipt before you send the form.

For a direct instruction, the two required actions are immediately visible. There is no need to add the attachment of or the submission of merely to sound formal.

The evaluation covers two changes. It examines how the team introduced them.

The evaluation covers two changes. It examines how the team introduced them.

Evaluation remains a useful topic noun, but the subordinate clause clearly names the action and the agent. Balance does not require eliminating all nominalisations.

Common mistakes

Incorrect:The rapidly expansion of the archive continued.

Correct:The rapid expansion of the archive continued.

The adjective rapid is needed before the noun expansion. The adverb rapidly is natural with the verb expanded, but not as this direct modifier of the noun.

Incorrect:Their refusal negotiate delayed the meeting.

Correct:Their refusal to negotiate delayed the meeting.

The noun refusal retains the infinitive complement to negotiate. Omitting to breaks the construction.

Incorrect:The their decision surprised us.

Correct:Their decision surprised us.

The possessive determiner their already determines decision; the cannot stand directly before their in this noun phrase.

Incorrect:The deterioration of the two roofs are visible.

Correct:The deterioration of the two roofs is visible.

The head word of the subject, deterioration, is singular. The plural noun roofs inside the of-group does not determine the form of the predicate.

Incorrect:The careful examination the evidence took two days.

Correct:The careful examination of the evidence took two days.

After examination, the object is expressed with of. A direct object is possible in examining the evidence, but not in this group with an ordinary noun.

Turning action nouns into clauses

1. See the action behind the noun

Nominalisation presents an action as a named thing or process: assess → assessment, reject → rejection. Verbalisation returns that action to a verb construction. Instead of reporting that an assessment was carried out, you can say directly who assessed what.

This is not a ban on nouns or a requirement to make every sentence conversational. For a reader who needs to understand an event quickly, a direct verb often makes reading easier. Professional writing can also use verbs directly while remaining precise.

In the pattern, actor is the person or entity performing the action; support verb is a verb such as carry out; action noun is a name for the action, such as assessment; action verb is assessed; complement is the required accompanying element, such as the route.

How to build it

actor + support verb + action noun → actor + action verb + complement

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
noun
—
A word naming a person, thing or idea: student, book, happiness.
complement
—
A part completing the meaning: in I am happy, happy describes my state.

The team carried out an assessment of the route. → The team assessed the route.

The team carried out an assessment of the route. → The team assessed the route.

The meaning of assessment moves into assessed; carried out is no longer needed. The actor and object stay the same.

The editor gave an explanation of the changes. → The editor explained the changes.

The editor gave an explanation of the changes. → The editor explained the changes.

Both versions are grammatical. The second names the action directly, but the first is not an error merely because it uses a noun.

2. This is not a mechanical reversal

The phrase the demolition of the bridge by itself does not tell us when the bridge was demolished, whether demolition is only planned, or who performs it. A finite verb form requires information from the wider context. If that information is absent, ask for clarification rather than arbitrarily adding a past tense or they.

Take particular care when unpacking possible, proposed, alleged, and other qualifications of a claim. A possible event must not become an accomplished fact. Two different contexts may legitimately produce two different verbal versions of the same heading.

The demolition of the bridge took place last year. → The bridge was demolished last year.

The demolition of the bridge took place last year. → The bridge was demolished last year.

The past tense comes from the complete source sentence, not from the noun demolition alone.

An extension of the trial period is possible. → The trial period may be extended.

An extension of the trial period is possible. → The trial period may be extended.

May preserves possibility. The trial period was extended would be grammatical, but it would report a different fact.

3. Actor, object, and passive voice

Identify who performs the action and what it affects. In the committee's rejection of the appeal, the committee rejects and the appeal is rejected. Do not move whichever noun you notice first into the actor's position.

Verbalisation does not mean changing to active voice. If the actor is unknown or the sentence is organised around the affected object, the passive is natural: use a form of be + past participle. Do not invent a worker merely to obtain an active sentence.

In the pattern, action noun names the action; the affected thing receives it; and past participle is a form such as deleted. Be changes according to tense and subject: was deleted, were deleted, may be deleted.

How to build it

action noun + of the affected thing → the affected thing + be + past participle (tense determined by context)

V3 / past participle
—
The third verb form: worked, gone, seen. Used after have/has or in the passive, for example; it is not always the same as V2.
noun
—
A word naming a person, thing or idea: student, book, happiness.

The committee's rejection of the appeal occurred on Monday. → The committee rejected the appeal on Monday.

The committee's rejection of the appeal occurred on Monday. → The committee rejected the appeal on Monday.

The committee is the actor; the appeal is the object. Do not reverse them.

The deletion of the message occurred overnight. → The message was deleted overnight.

The deletion of the message occurred overnight. → The message was deleted overnight.

The unknown actor is not named. The passive sentence still unpacks the nominalisation into a verb.

4. Each verb has its own construction

When changing word class, restructure the connections too: an investigation into the incident → investigate the incident; a discussion about the plan → discuss the plan. A preposition required after a noun is not necessarily required after its verb.

Not all verbs behave alike. Compare a decision to leave → decide to leave and opposition to the plan → oppose the plan. Look for the particular verb's construction, not a rule to remove every preposition.

We conducted an investigation into the complaint. → We investigated the complaint.

We conducted an investigation into the complaint. → We investigated the complaint.

Investigate takes a direct object; do not transfer into.

Marta made a decision not to apply. → Marta decided not to apply.

Marta made a decision not to apply. → Marta decided not to apply.

Not remains before to apply: she decided to refrain from applying, rather than simply not having decided what to do yet.

5. Move a modifier without changing what it modifies

If an adjective describes the manner of an action, the verbal version often needs an adverb: careful examination → examine carefully. But automatic, annual, possible, and other modifiers express different relationships; an -ly ending alone does not guarantee preservation of meaning.

Distinguish a characteristic of the action from a characteristic of its object. In careful examination of fragile objects, the objects are fragile, not the examination. Quantity and recurrence must also be preserved: three requests means three acts of requesting, not three recipients.

The inspector made a careful examination of the fragile vase. → The inspector examined the fragile vase carefully.

The inspector made a careful examination of the fragile vase. → The inspector examined the fragile vase carefully.

Careful becomes carefully; fragile stays with vase.

We made three requests for an update. → We requested an update three times.

We made three requests for an update. → We requested an update three times.

Three times preserves the number of requests. Three updates would give a number of updates that the original sentence does not specify.

6. Preserve tense, negation, and logical relationships

The support verb often carries tense or aspect that must transfer to the main verb: has made a recommendation → has recommended; is carrying out an inspection → is inspecting. If a process is described, do not present it as completed.

After, because of, and despite express different relationships. After the revision does not mean because the text was revised. A rewrite must also preserve negation, possibility, obligation, quantity, and who merely made a claim rather than proved it.

The panel has not made a recommendation. → The panel has not recommended anything.

The panel has not made a recommendation. → The panel has not recommended anything.

The negative result up to the present is preserved. If the source names a particular object of the recommendation, retain it.

Despite a reduction in prices, sales did not rise. → Although prices fell, sales did not rise.

Despite a reduction in prices, sales did not rise. → Although prices fell, sales did not rise.

Although expresses concession. Because would create a causal relationship that is absent here.

7. When to retain the noun

A nominalisation can concisely name a familiar concept, serve as a heading, or connect sentences. After describing how something was evaluated, this evaluation allows you to refer to that work as a whole.

Edit selectively: unpack an unclear action without destroying a useful connection. There is no universal rule that a verb is always clearer, shorter, and less formal. Advice to avoid excessive nominalisation is stylistic guidance based on the reader's needs, not a test of grammaticality.

The team evaluated the project. This evaluation informed the next phase.

The team evaluated the project. This evaluation informed the next phase.

The verb introduces the action, and the noun in the next sentence refers back to it concisely.

The annual inspection is tomorrow. The engineers will inspect both lifts.

The annual inspection is tomorrow. The engineers will inspect both lifts.

Inspection names the scheduled event; inspect specifies the action and its actors. The coexistence of both forms is not an error.

8. A short editing check

First identify the action, its participants, and every qualification of the claim. Then choose a verb with the right construction and recover the tense from context. Reread the new version as a separate message: does it assert exactly what is known?

Finally, check the reader's needs. A notice should make the required action immediately visible; a report should show who established what and with what degree of confidence. If information is missing, a clarifying question is appropriate, rather than a polished sentence containing invented facts.

Submission of the form by applicants is required before Friday. → Applicants must submit the form before Friday.

Submission of the form by applicants is required before Friday. → Applicants must submit the form before Friday.

The applicants, form, obligation, and deadline are preserved. May submit would change the obligation into permission or possibility.

Does 'the expansion of the service' refer to a completed change or a proposal?

Does 'the expansion of the service' refer to a completed change or a proposal?

The question helps avoid assigning an unsupported time or event status to a short heading.

Common mistakes

Incorrect:The team investigation the incident yesterday.

Correct:The team investigated the incident yesterday.

A past-tense verb is needed after the subject. The noun investigation cannot serve as the predicate.

Incorrect:The documents were examine yesterday.

Correct:The documents were examined yesterday.

In the passive after were, use the past participle examined rather than the base form.

Incorrect:The board discussed about the proposal.

Correct:The board discussed the proposal.

Discuss takes a direct object in this meaning. About belongs to the noun construction a discussion about.

Incorrect:The manager decided not renew the contract.

Correct:The manager decided not to renew the contract.

After decide, this action requires a to-infinitive; not comes before to renew.

Incorrect:The inspector examined the seal careful.

Correct:The inspector examined the seal carefully.

The adverb carefully expresses the manner of examination. The adjective careful does not modify examined here.

Adjectival and adverbial grammatical metaphor

1. Compressing meaning, not arbitrarily changing word class

The same information can be expanded into a sentence or incorporated into a noun phrase. In the then editor, the temporal meaning ‘was editor at that time’ becomes part of the description of a person; in the unemployed, a characteristic names a group of people. In this topic, grammatical metaphor is a way of viewing this repackaging of meaning.

Describing the meaning does not require every word to be assigned a new word class. The poor can be analysed as a noun phrase containing an adjective without an expressed noun, including as a fused modifier-head construction. For practice, the referent, form and agreement matter more than choosing a single theoretical label.

The then editor requested a second review.

The then editor requested a second review.

Then identifies who held the position at the time mentioned. The sentence does not say when that person stopped being editor.

The unemployed need access to reliable information.

The unemployed need access to reliable information.

This refers to people, so need is plural. It does not name the abstract state unemployment.

2. Then: the time of a role or the time of an action?

The then director means the director at that time; the temporal reference point must be clear from context. Then before a job title does not automatically mean ‘no longer the director now’. That claim requires additional information.

Compare the director then replied: then can mean ‘at that time’ or ‘next’ and applies to the reply. The sentence is grammatical, but does not itself fulfil the task of incorporating a temporal description into the job title. The director at the time and the person who was director at the time are natural expanded alternatives.

How to build it

the + then + job title ↔ the person who held that position at the time

In 2016, the then chair proposed two changes.

In 2016, the then chair proposed two changes.

2016 establishes the reference point; two preserves the number of proposals.

The chair then proposed two changes.

The chair then proposed two changes.

In a sequential account of a meeting, then organises events rather than identifying who held the chair’s role in an earlier period.

3. Above and below: navigating a text

In writing, the above analysis means the analysis presented earlier, and the analysis above can also refer to a previous passage. Above points backwards in the text here; it does not mean that a conclusion is better, more reliable or on an upper floor.

For material the reader will see next, the usual forms are the table below and the following table. Do not mechanically transfer every above pattern to below. In physical space, the room above us means a room overhead: without context, establish whether the reference is to a document or a location.

The reference must be identifiable. If three tables appear earlier, Table 2 may be clearer than the above table. This is a question of precision and navigation, not an automatic grammatical error in the shorter version.

The above comparison does not establish a cause.

The above comparison does not establish a cause.

Above locates the earlier comparison; does not prevents a limitation of the evidence from becoming a claim about a cause.

The table below lists twelve sites.

The table below lists twelve sites.

Below directs the reader forwards in the document. Twelve counts the sites, not the tables.

4. Former, formerly and the former/latter pair

Former is an adjective, not an adverb supposedly turned into one. A former manager is someone who previously held that role but no longer holds it within the relevant time frame. Formerly is an adverb: she formerly managed the unit; he was formerly a manager. Formerly cannot directly replace former before manager.

Another meaning of former is the first of two mentioned referents; latter means the second. The former proposal and the latter proposal do not mean a previous proposal and a late proposal. The former / the latter can also be used without repeating the noun. With three or more separate options, naming the intended one is clearer; do not declare every such text ungrammatical merely because the reference is awkward.

A former curator now runs the archive.

A former curator now runs the archive.

Former describes a previous role. Formerly could accompany a verb but cannot replace this adjective.

We considered a grant and a loan; the latter would need to be repaid.

We considered a grant and a loan; the latter would need to be repaid.

The second of the two options is the loan. Would preserves the conditional perspective rather than reporting a loan already taken out.

5. The + adjective: people as a group

Established expressions such as the poor, the rich, the elderly and the unemployed refer to groups of people. In this meaning, they take plural agreement: the elderly are, the unemployed have. Do not add -s to the adjective as though it were an ordinary plural noun.

For one person, use a noun: an unemployed person, an elderly resident. Not every adjective can be left without a noun in the same way. When referring to particular participants, or when it matters not to reduce people to one characteristic, you can explicitly say people, residents or participants. This is an appropriate wording choice, not a correction of a grammatical error in the unemployed.

How to build it

the + established adjective referring to a group of people + plural verb

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
adjective
—
A word describing what someone or something is like: happy, tired, interesting.

The elderly are eligible for the local service.

The elderly are eligible for the local service.

Are agrees with the group of people. The example describes a hypothetical local programme, not a universal eligibility rule.

An elderly resident has requested a printed copy.

An elderly resident has requested a printed copy.

The noun resident identifies one person, and has is singular. Replacing this with the elderly would change the referent.

6. Abstract the unknown is not a plural group of people

Not every combination of the and an adjectival form refers to people. The unknown, meaning what is not known, usually denotes a single abstract domain and takes singular agreement: the unknown is. Read the meaning rather than extending the poor are pattern to every case.

Unknown also has ordinary countable uses: an unknown can be an unidentified person or quantity, and several unknowns can mean several unknown factors. These forms do not justify creating the poors by analogy.

The unknown is not necessarily dangerous.

The unknown is not necessarily dangerous.

Is matches the abstract meaning. Not necessarily does not amount to a claim that everything unknown is safe.

Several unknowns remain in the estimate.

Several unknowns remain in the estimate.

Unknowns here are separate countable factors, not the abstract the unknown.

7. Limits of transfer: check the whole construction

The availability of the then minister does not create a rule allowing any adverb before any noun. Formerly has the corresponding adjective former; elsewhere naturally stays after a noun or within a larger construction. Learn established expressions as specific patterns.

Then and there means ‘immediately, on the spot’ and usually describes an action. The ordinary adverbial replied then and there does not become an ordinary modifier of a job title. Deliberate authorial compounds and unusual hyphenated formations are possible in creative writing, but they are not the model here for neutral professional prose.

The coordinator settled the issue then and there.

The coordinator settled the issue then and there.

The whole idiom applies to settled. It does not identify who held the coordinator role at some earlier time.

The researcher was formerly a consultant.

The researcher was formerly a consultant.

Formerly accompanies the predicative construction was a consultant; it should not be prohibited in every position.

8. Compress, expand and check the facts

After paraphrasing, check five things: who or what is referred to, quantity, negation, degree of certainty and the time reference. Compression does not add causes, results or facts about someone’s later career. A statement does not mean a statement denying all allegations unless that content is supplied.

In a report, a short modifier can reduce repetition. In conversation, an expanded explanation is often easier to understand. If an exercise specifically asks for the then + job title, another grammatical construction may not meet its learning aim; outside that restriction, it is entirely acceptable. In open answers, the model is one option, and the criteria help you check your own wording.

The above findings may indicate two separate problems.

The above findings may indicate two separate problems.

Expanding this to the findings presented earlier must preserve may and two; a possibility must not become proof.

The person who was dean in 2019 did not sign the letter.

The person who was dean in 2019 did not sign the letter.

If 2019 is already established in context, the then dean compresses only the reference to the person; did not sign remains negative.

Common mistakes

Incorrect:The formerly director spoke briefly.

Correct:The former director spoke briefly.

Before director with the meaning ‘previously holding the role’, use the adjective former. Formerly is possible in a different construction: the person who was formerly director.

Incorrect:The unemployed is entitled to advice under this scheme.

Correct:The unemployed are entitled to advice under this scheme.

The unemployed refers to a group of people, so it needs plural are, not is. The programme’s condition remains unchanged.

Incorrect:The poors need better access to transport.

Correct:The poor need better access to transport.

In this established group expression, poor does not take -s.
