And adds another part of the message
And is a coordinating conjunction. It shows that the speaker adds a second part after the first: another object, characteristic, action or fact. The two parts need not have similar meanings; what matters is that both belong to one message.
In I need tea and water, and means that both drinks are needed. It does not offer a choice or create a contrast.
A + and + B
I need tea and water.
I need tea and water.
And adds water to tea: the speaker names two things they need.
The room is small and warm.
The room is small and warm.
The second characteristic, warm, is added to the first, small.
Joining matching grammatical units
And usually joins units of the same grammatical type: noun with noun, adjective with adjective, verb with verb, phrase with phrase, or one complete clause with another.
Check both sides of and. Tea and coffee has names of things on both sides; quiet and clean has two characteristics; reads and writes has two actions. This parallel structure helps make the sentence clear.
noun + and + noun · adjective + and + adjective · verb + and + verb
- verb / V —
- A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
- noun —
- A word naming a person, thing or idea: student, book, happiness.
- adjective —
- A word describing what someone or something is like: happy, tired, interesting.
We bought bread and cheese.
We bought bread and cheese.
And joins two nouns naming the things bought.
Maya is calm and friendly.
Maya is calm and friendly.
Calm and friendly are two adjective descriptions of the same person.
One subject can have two actions
If the same person performs two actions, the subject often does not need repeating. In Leo works and studies, Leo applies to both verbs.
After and, keep the second verb in the form its subject requires. For example, she cooks and cleans has -s on both verbs.
subject + verb 1 + and + verb 2
- subject / S —
- The grammatical subject: who or what the clause is about; the verb agrees with it. In The book was written, the book is the subject, although someone else does the action.
- verb / V —
- A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
Nora sings and dances.
Nora sings and dances.
Nora is the shared subject of sings and dances, so the name is not repeated.
I open the window and turn on the light.
I open the window and turn on the light.
The subject I applies equally to both actions named in sequence.
Two full clauses with different subjects
And can combine two complete statements. If the actions have different performers, each clause usually keeps its own subject: Mia cooks and Ben washes the dishes.
Do not remove the second subject if that changes who performs the action. Mia cooks and washes the dishes means Mia performs both actions; Mia cooks and Ben washes the dishes names two people.
subject 1 + verb 1 + and + subject 2 + verb 2
- subject / S —
- The grammatical subject: who or what the clause is about; the verb agrees with it. In The book was written, the book is the subject, although someone else does the action.
- verb / V —
- A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
Mia cooks and Ben washes the dishes.
Mia cooks and Ben washes the dishes.
And adds the second fact, and Ben remains the second clause’s subject.
The shop is open and Maya is inside.
The shop is open and Maya is inside.
Each clause has its own subject and the verb is.
And at the end of a list, and commas
In an ordinary list of three or more items, and usually comes only before the final item: bread, cheese and fruit. Commas separate the preceding items.
Both list punctuation patterns are possible: bread, cheese and fruit and bread, cheese, and fruit. The second is particularly common in American English; British English can also use this comma. A comma is usually unnecessary between short clauses sharing a subject. Between longer full clauses with different subjects, a comma can make reading easier. This lesson therefore does not label one natural option universally incorrect.
item 1, item 2(,) and item 3
I packed a shirt, a book and my phone.
I packed a shirt, a book and my phone.
And comes before the final item of a three-item list; there is no comma before and.
I packed a shirt, a book, and my phone.
I packed a shirt, a book, and my phone.
The comma before and is an acceptable way to punctuate the same list.
And, or and but express different intentions
And adds information. Or gives a choice or alternative, while but signals a contrast. A sentence with or or but can be grammatical yet miss the task’s goal if it asks for two additional facts without a choice or contrast.
Do not choose the conjunction solely by whether you like both parts. Nina is tired and she is working grammatically adds two facts, even if their connection seems surprising. To highlight a contrast, the speaker could deliberately choose but, presenting the same facts differently.
I work and study.
I work and study.
And states both facts about the speaker.
Nina is tired and she is working.
Nina is tired and she is working.
And simply adds the second fact; the facts need not be semantically similar.
Using the rule in your own speech
Before and, identify what you are adding: an object, characteristic, action or whole clause. Then check that the elements are grammatically compatible and it is clear who performs each action.
For a self-check, read the sentence slowly: is there a complete unit on each side of and, has a necessary second subject been lost, and does and really express the intention “also”? Your own examples can be true or invented.
My desk has a lamp and two small plants.
My desk has a lamp and two small plants.
The speaker adds another kind of object to a short description of their desk.
I answer emails and my colleague speaks to customers.
I answer emails and my colleague speaks to customers.
And combines two work-related facts; each action has its own subject.
Common mistakes
Incorrect:Mia is calm and.
Correct:Mia is calm.
And cannot finish this complete sentence without a second added part after it. The minimal correction is to remove the unnecessary conjunction.
Incorrect:Leo and works at home.
Correct:Leo works at home.
Do not put and between the subject Leo and its only predicate works when there is no second coordinated unit.
Incorrect:We need and bread.
Correct:We need bread.
There is no first item of a pair after need before and, so the conjunction is unnecessary.
Incorrect:The café is open and Ana inside is.
Correct:The café is open and Ana is inside.
The second full clause needs the usual order: subject Ana + verb is + location inside.
