Gerunds vs Infinitives: Change of Meaning

After stop, the -ing form names the action that ended, while a to-infinitive names the purpose of stopping or pausing another action.

Published

Stop doing vs stop to do

One stop, two different pictures

The key question is not which form is correct, but which event the speaker means. Both patterns, stop + -ing and stop + to-infinitive, are grammatical, but assign different roles to the actions.

With stop + -ing, the action after stop is the one that ends. With stop + to-infinitive, another action or movement comes first; the person stops or interrupts it to perform the action after to.

How to build it

stop + verb-ing → end this action | stop + to + base verb → pause to perform another action

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V1 / base form
—
The base verb without to: work, go, be.
V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.

Maya stopped checking work email after dinner.

Maya stopped checking work email after dinner.

Checking email is the action that no longer continues after dinner.

Maya stopped to check an urgent message on her way home.

Maya stopped to check an urgent message on her way home.

She interrupted her movement; checking the message is the purpose of the stop.

Stop + -ing: end an action

Use an -ing form after stop when that action no longer happens at the described moment or during the described period. It can be a habit, repeated activity, process or sound.

The context determines how long the cessation lasts. I stopped talking for a minute describes a short pause, while I stopped smoking last year describes giving up a habit. The pattern itself does not promise the change is permanent.

How to build it

stop / stops / stopped / has stopped + verb-ing

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.

The machine stopped making that noise.

The machine stopped making that noise.

Making the noise is precisely what ended.

We've stopped printing every document.

We've stopped printing every document.

Stop is in Present Perfect, but the following verb still takes -ing.

They stopped talking for a moment.

They stopped talking for a moment.

For a moment shows that the cessation was temporary.

Stop + to-infinitive: a pause for a purpose

The to-infinitive answers “Why did they stop?” The previous action is often named in the context: walking, driving, working or reading. The action after to is the purpose of the pause.

The previous action is often resumed afterwards, but the form itself does not guarantee this. If resuming matters, state it: We stopped to rest and then continued walking.

How to build it

stop / stops / stopped + to + base verb

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V1 / base form
—
The base verb without to: work, go, be.

We stopped to look at the map.

We stopped to look at the map.

We interrupted our movement; look takes the base form after to.

Rosa stops to stretch every hour.

Rosa stops to stretch every hour.

Stops agrees with Rosa, while to stretch names the purpose of the regular pause.

The bus stopped to let an ambulance pass.

The bus stopped to let an ambulance pass.

The bus stopped moving for another action: let an ambulance pass.

The same verb, a different meaning

The clearest way to see the contrast is to keep the same lexical action. Stopped talking means the conversation ended. Stopped to talk means the speaker interrupted another activity to have a conversation.

A grammatical sentence with the other pattern is therefore not always a language error: it may report a different fact. In a closed exercise, the context must make clear whether the action ended or was the purpose of a pause.

She stopped talking when the film began.

She stopped talking when the film began.

Talking ended.

She stopped to talk to a neighbour on her way out.

She stopped to talk to a neighbour on her way out.

Movement towards the exit was interrupted for a conversation.

She stopped to eat meat two years ago.

She stopped to eat meat two years ago.

The sentence is grammatical, but does not mean she gave up meat; that meaning requires stopped eating meat.

Tense, person, negatives and questions

Stop itself changes: I stop, she stops, we stopped, they have stopped. After it, keep either the -ing form or to + base verb. After did or didn’t, use base stop: Did you stop working?; I didn’t stop to ask.

The negative keeps the two meanings distinct. I didn’t stop working means I continued working. I didn’t stop to talk means I did not pause for a conversation.

Did you stop using the old password?

Did you stop using the old password?

Stop follows did, while the action whose cessation is questioned takes -ing.

I didn't stop to take a break.

I didn't stop to take a break.

The pause for the purpose is what is negated.

The rain has stopped falling.

The rain has stopped falling.

Stop can have an inanimate subject; falling is the process that ended.

Choosing the form from the context

For -ing, look for signals such as no longer, ending, giving up a habit or becoming silent. For a to-infinitive, look for two events: the background action that was interrupted and the purpose of interrupting it.

Then continued, on the way and during the drive often make the background action visible, but are not mechanical markers. The relationship in meaning between the actions remains decisive.

On the way to the station, I stopped to check the platform number.

On the way to the station, I stopped to check the platform number.

On the way establishes movement; checking is the purpose of the pause.

After the complaint, the shop stopped selling the product.

After the complaint, the shop stopped selling the product.

Selling the product is the activity that ended.

The rule’s limits and using it in speech

This lesson specifically practises stop with -ing or a purpose infinitive. It does not separately cover stop someone from doing, stop by, remember/forget doing vs to do or try doing vs to do.

For your own statement, first formulate the facts: what exactly ended, or which background action was interrupted and why. The form after stop then follows from the meaning, rather than from guessing an ending.

I stopped taking the lift, so now I use the stairs.

I stopped taking the lift, so now I use the stairs.

The continuation confirms a change of habit.

I stopped to read the safety notice before entering.

I stopped to read the safety notice before entering.

Entering is the background action; reading the notice is the purpose of the stop.

Common mistakes

Incorrect:She no longer eats meat; she stopped eat meat last year.

Correct:She no longer eats meat; she stopped eating meat last year.

When the action itself ends, stop needs an -ing form after it, rather than a base form without to.

Incorrect:During the drive, we stopped to checking the map.

Correct:During the drive, we stopped to check the map.

In a purpose infinitive after to, use base check, rather than checking.

Incorrect:They didn't stopped working at six.

Correct:They didn't stop working at six.

After did not / didn’t, use base stop, rather than stopped.

Incorrect:The machine is quiet now because it has stopped make that noise.

Correct:The machine is quiet now because it has stopped making that noise.

Present Perfect changes the form of stop, but the process that ended still takes -ing.

Remember / forget + -ing or to + verb

The main guide: an event or a required action

Remember and forget allow two grammatical patterns, but their meanings are not interchangeable. With -ing, the action took place earlier, and the speaker now discusses the memory of that event. With to + base form, the focus is on something that needed or will need to be done.

Look beyond calendar words such as yesterday or tomorrow to the relationship between the two actions. With -ing, the named event happens first and is remembered afterwards. With to + verb, remembering succeeds or fails first, affecting whether the required action is carried out.

How to build it

remember/forget + V-ing → memory of an earlier event; remember/forget + to + V → remembering a required action

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.

I remember meeting Eva at the conference.

I remember meeting Eva at the conference.

The meeting has already happened; the speaker now recalls it.

I remembered to email Eva after the conference.

I remembered to email Eva after the conference.

The speaker first remembered the required action and then performed it.

Remember + -ing: recalling an earlier event

Remember + -ing means that someone has a memory of their own action or an event they experienced or witnessed. The subject of remember is usually also a participant in or witness to the -ing event.

Negative I don’t remember + -ing reports an absence of a memory, but does not by itself prove that the event did not happen. A photograph, recording, or someone else's account may provide evidence of the event.

How to build it

remember + V-ing / don’t remember + V-ing

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.

I remember signing the form in your office.

I remember signing the form in your office.

The signing occurred earlier, and the speaker has a specific memory of it.

I don’t remember closing that window, but it is closed now.

I don’t remember closing that window, but it is closed now.

An absence of a memory is not a claim that the window was not closed.

Remember + to-infinitive: not forgetting a required action

Remember to do means remembering an action that needs to be performed. In the instruction Remember to call me, the action is still ahead. In a past narrative, I remembered to call usually reports that remembering succeeded and the call happened.

To is the infinitive marker here and requires the base form: to call, to bring, to check. Do not use an -ing form after this to.

How to build it

remember + to + base verb

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V1 / base form
—
The base verb without to: work, go, be.

Remember to save a copy before you close the file.

Remember to save a copy before you close the file.

This is a reminder about an action that still needs to be performed.

Nadia remembered to bring her passport.

Nadia remembered to bring her passport.

In a past narrative, remembered to emphasises successful performance of the required action.

Forget + to-infinitive: a required action left undone

Forget to do means not remembering a required action in time. In the typical context, the action did not happen: I forgot to attach the file means that the file was not attached.

The context should clearly establish the action left undone. If a door remained unlocked, forgot to lock is natural. Forgot locking would describe a different situation: locking happened, but the memory of it was lost.

How to build it

forget/forgot + to + base verb → fail to remember and leave the action undone

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V1 / base form
—
The base verb without to: work, go, be.

I forgot to attach the document, so I sent a second email.

I forgot to attach the document, so I sent a second email.

The first message was sent without the document: the required action did not happen.

He forgot to lock the gate, and it stayed open all night.

He forgot to lock the gate, and it stayed open all night.

The consequence directly confirms that the gate was not locked.

Forget + -ing: an event happened, but its memory was lost

Forget + -ing concerns an event that has already happened but is no longer remembered. The contrast is clear in I forgot meeting Leo before, so I introduced myself again: the previous meeting occurred, but was not retained in memory.

Not every theoretically possible forget + -ing expression is equally natural. For everyday uncertainty, I don’t remember locking the door is often more usual than I forgot locking the door. By contrast, never forget + -ing very naturally emphasises an unforgettable event. This concerns usual usage and context, not a ban on the grammatical pattern.

How to build it

forget + V-ing → lose the memory of something that has already happened

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.

I had forgotten meeting Leo before, so I introduced myself again.

I had forgotten meeting Leo before, so I introduced myself again.

The first meeting really occurred; only the memory of it was lost.

I will never forget seeing the sea for the first time.

I will never forget seeing the sea for the first time.

Never forget + -ing naturally describes a powerful, unforgettable experience.

Negation changes the meaning within the pattern

The position of not matters. Remember not doing means recalling that you did not do something earlier. Remember not to do means remembering a prohibition or a requirement to refrain from an action.

Likewise, Don’t forget to do is a reminder to perform an action, while I don’t remember doing reports an absence of a memory. Do not automatically express a reminder with remember + -ing: a task that is still to be done requires to + verb.

How to build it

remember not doing ≠ remember not to do

I remember not taking a coat that morning.

I remember not taking a coat that morning.

The speaker recalls the earlier fact of not performing an action.

Remember not to mention the surprise party.

Remember not to mention the surprise party.

This concerns required future behaviour: refrain from mentioning it.

The limits of the rule and application in speech

Remember is not the same as remind. I remember calling Ana means that I have a memory. Ana reminded me to call means that Ana helped me not to forget. This rule practises remember/forget followed by an action, not every construction with remind.

In conversation, establish the facts first: did the action already happen, or was it simply required? Then identify the state of memory: is there a memory, is it absent, did remembering succeed, or was the required action missed? Only then choose -ing or to + verb.

How to build it

facts about the event → state of memory → required pattern

I remember sending the invoice, but Ana reminded me to save the receipt.

I remember sending the invoice, but Ana reminded me to save the receipt.

Remember describes the speaker's own memory; remind takes the object me and names an external reminder.

I remembered to save the receipt, and I remember putting it in this folder.

I remembered to save the receipt, and I remember putting it in this folder.

The first form reports a completed task; the second reports a memory of the event.

Common mistakes

Incorrect:I remember meet him at the workshop.

Correct:I remember meeting him at the workshop.

After remember, a memory of an earlier meeting requires an -ing form.

Incorrect:Please remember call the client before noon.

Correct:Please remember to call the client before noon.

A reminder about a required action needs to + base form.

Incorrect:She forgot to locking the back door.

Correct:She forgot to lock the back door.

After infinitive marker to, use base-form lock, not locking.

Incorrect:I don’t remember to signing that agreement.

Correct:I don’t remember signing that agreement.

To express an absence of a memory of the earlier signing, use signing without to.

Incorrect:He forgot send the booking request.

Correct:He forgot to send the booking request.

After forgot, an unperformed task requires a to-infinitive.

Try doing or try to do: experiment or effort

Two questions about the same action

After try, the form of the next verb helps show what we mean by trying. If the question is Will this method work?, try + -ing is natural. If the question is Can I manage this difficult action?, use try + to-infinitive.

This is not a correct-versus-incorrect pair. The same action can appear in either pattern, but the speaker changes the focus. The problem, goal, difficulty, and expected result in context therefore determine the choice.

How to build it

try + verb-ing = test a method; try + to + base verb = attempt to perform an action

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V1 / base form
—
The base verb without to: work, go, be.
V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.

Try restarting the router.

Try restarting the router.

Restarting is proposed as a possible solution to the problem.

I tried to restart the router, but the button was stuck.

I tried to restart the router, but the button was stuck.

The focus is on the effort to perform a difficult action.

Try + -ing: test a method

Try + verb-ing means perform an action as an experiment and see whether it helps, is enjoyable, or produces the desired effect. It is common in advice about technology, work, learning, healthy habits, and everyday problems.

When referring to the past, this pattern usually indicates that the method was actually tested. Its result can be positive or negative, however: tried opening the window does not mean the room became cooler.

How to build it

try + opening / changing / using / not using

Have you tried moving the desk nearer the window?

Have you tried moving the desk nearer the window?

Moving the desk is considered as a way to get more light.

We tried working in the library, but it was still too noisy.

We tried working in the library, but it was still too noisy.

The method was tested, but it did not produce the desired result.

Try + to-infinitive: make an effort

Try + to + base verb expresses an attempt to do or achieve something. The context often provides an obstacle: the action is difficult, time is short, something is broken, or the result does not depend on the speaker alone.

Try to do does not itself say whether the attempt succeeded. The continuation clarifies the result: I tried to call her, and eventually she answered or I tried to call her, but there was no signal.

How to build it

try + to + open / reach / finish / avoid

She tried to lift the suitcase, but it was too heavy.

She tried to lift the suitcase, but it was too heavy.

The weight creates an obstacle to performing the action.

I will try to finish the report before lunch.

I will try to finish the report before lunch.

The speaker commits to making an effort; success is not yet known.

The form after try

After try meaning experiment, use an -ing form without to: try changing, tried taking, have tried using. After try meaning attempt, use to and the base form: try to change, tried to take, is trying to use.

Tense and aspect are expressed on try: tried, is trying, have tried. The following form remains verb-ing or to + base verb. These patterns do not use a bare infinitive after try: try open and tried fix are ungrammatical.

How to build it

try / tried / be trying + verb-ing or to + base verb

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V1 / base form
—
The base verb without to: work, go, be.
V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.

Mina is trying to finish the report.

Mina is trying to finish the report.

The continuous form is expressed in trying; to finish remains after it.

They have tried using a shared calendar.

They have tried using a shared calendar.

Have tried forms the Present Perfect; the method being tested takes the form using.

Negatives: what not to do

A negative before the second action preserves the meaning contrast. Try not to interrupt means make an effort to avoid interrupting. Try not using notifications for a day means test a day without notifications and observe the result.

Do not confuse these forms with negating try itself. I did not try to call means no attempt to call was made; I tried not to call means the speaker made an effort to avoid calling.

How to build it

try not to + verb = make an effort to avoid an action; try not + verb-ing = test the absence of an action

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.

Try not using your phone after nine and see whether you sleep better.

Try not using your phone after nine and see whether you sleep better.

Avoiding the phone is an experimental change of habit.

I tried not to wake the baby, but the floor creaked.

I tried not to wake the baby, but the floor creaked.

The speaker made an effort to avoid an unwanted action.

When both options are possible

A real situation can contain both a method and a difficulty. Try opening the window presents opening it as a possible solution to a stuffy room. Try to open the window presents opening itself as an action that may be difficult. Both can be appropriate if the context supports the intended focus.

Words such as but, difficult, or see if often offer clues, but they are not automatic markers. Read the whole meaning: but can introduce either an experiment's unsuccessful outcome or an obstacle to an attempted action.

How to build it

the same verb ≠ the same message

verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.

I tried opening the windows, but the room was still stuffy.

I tried opening the windows, but the room was still stuffy.

The windows were opened as a way to ventilate the room; the method did not produce the desired result.

I tried to open the windows, but the handles would not move.

I tried to open the windows, but the handles would not move.

An obstacle prevented the action itself from being completed.

Using the contrast in advice and narratives

In advice, identify the problem first, then propose an action as a test: Try lowering the brightness; it may save battery. In an account of a difficult goal, state the effort and result: I tried to finish before five, but I needed another hour.

To express the contrast in natural language, combine the patterns: We tried using a checklist, and I will try to follow it every day. The first part names a tool that was tested; the second describes a personal effort to follow it.

How to build it

problem → try + -ing as a method; difficult goal → try + to-infinitive as an effort

V-ing / -ing
—
The verb form ending in -ing: working, going. Its role depends on the construction.
infinitive
—
The base verb form. With to: to work; without to: work. The pattern determines whether to is needed.

Try taking a short break; you may return with a clearer idea.

Try taking a short break; you may return with a clearer idea.

The speaker proposes testing one way to solve a problem.

I tried to stay calm during the interview.

I tried to stay calm during the interview.

Staying calm was a goal requiring effort.

Common mistakes

Incorrect:Try restart the router; it may solve the problem.

Correct:Try restarting the router; it may solve the problem.

Do not put a bare base form after try in this pattern. The proposed experiment requires an -ing form.

Incorrect:I tried opened the jar, but the lid was stuck.

Correct:I tried to open the jar, but the lid was stuck.

The attempt pattern needs to followed by the base form open, not the past form opened.

Incorrect:She is try to finish the report.

Correct:She is trying to finish the report.

After is in the Present Continuous, use trying.

Incorrect:We tried to working in the library to see if it was quieter.

Correct:We tried working in the library to see if it was quieter.

Do not combine to with an -ing form here. Working in the library was tested as a method.

Incorrect:He tried not wake the baby, but the floor creaked.

Correct:He tried not to wake the baby, but the floor creaked.

In the effort pattern, retain to + base verb after not.
