The quality first, its bearer second: predicate-first structures

C2 · Learn to begin a sentence with a predicative quality, put the linking verb before the subject and control emphasis: Particularly useful is the final checklist. This is full inversion, useful not only in literature but also in coherent description and argument.

1. What something is like, then which thing it is

In ordinary word order, we first name an item and then attribute a quality to it: The final checklist is particularly useful. In this lesson's construction, we first present the quality particularly useful, and name its bearer after the linking verb is. The meaning about usefulness stays the same, but the reader enters the sentence through the evaluation.

Predicate-first here means fronting a predicative complement: the part that characterizes the subject. It does not mean moving any verb or the whole predicate to the beginning. The most reliable basis for practice is an adjective phrase or predicative expression with forms of be.

How to build it

subject + be + quality → quality + be + subject

subject / S
—
The grammatical subject: who or what the clause is about; the verb agrees with it. In The book was written, the book is the subject, although someone else does the action.

Particularly useful is the final checklist.

Particularly useful is the final checklist.

Particularly useful characterizes the final checklist; the checklist itself is the subject, even though it comes at the end.

Of particular interest are the handwritten notes.

Of particular interest are the handwritten notes.

The predicative expression need not be a single adjective: of particular interest also attributes a characteristic to the subject.

2. Full inversion, but not a question

In the complement–verb–subject pattern, the linking verb precedes the subject: Visible were the old foundations. This order is a type of full inversion, also called subject-dependent inversion. The sentence remains declarative: it reports what was visible rather than asking about it.

Do not add do or did to be merely because the subject comes after the verb. Do not confuse this pattern with a fronted object in That detail I remember, either: detail is the object of remembering here, not a quality of I.

How to build it

predicative complement + linking verb + subject

subject / S
—
The grammatical subject: who or what the clause is about; the verb agrees with it. In The book was written, the book is the subject, although someone else does the action.
verb / V
—
A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
complement
—
A part completing the meaning: in I am happy, happy describes my state.

Visible were the old foundations.

Visible were the old foundations.

Visible is the quality, were the linking verb and the old foundations the subject. This is a description with full inversion.

That detail I remember.

That detail I remember.

This is grammatical object fronting: I remains before remember. It is a related but different technique.

3. The subject after the linking verb determines number

The quality does not become the subject after rearrangement. In our pattern, the linking verb agrees with the bearer of the quality: one reason takes is/was; several reasons take are/were. The adjective itself does not show number.

Find the head word in a long subject. In the quality of the recordings, it is quality, not recordings. Number depends on quality even when the whole phrase follows is. Collective nouns and nominal identifications with two noun phrases can have separate subtleties; here we practise clear cases without that dispute.

Particularly important is the quality of the recordings.

Particularly important is the quality of the recordings.

The head word quality is singular; plural recordings inside the dependent phrase does not change is.

Equally valuable were the comments from readers.

Equally valuable were the comments from readers.

Comments is plural, and the past time frame gives were. Equally compares this with a value already mentioned.

4. Move the complete quality; keep its words together

A predicative expression often contains intensification, comparison or a dependent phrase: particularly useful, more difficult than the first task, essential to the plan. Move the phrase that expresses the intended characteristic as a whole.

In the lesson's basic patterns, put is/are/was/were immediately after the complete phrase, then the whole subject. This is a practical construction pattern, not a ban on all parenthetical words in real texts. Do not split the subject so that its modifier accidentally describes something else.

More difficult than the first task was the final interview.

More difficult than the first task was the final interview.

The whole phrase more difficult than the first task precedes was; the final interview is what proved more difficult.

Essential to the plan is a reliable way to contact every volunteer.

Essential to the plan is a reliable way to contact every volunteer.

To the plan stays with essential; to contact every volunteer belongs to way and therefore remains inside the subject.

5. More than drama: connecting ideas and introducing information

The initial characteristic can pick up an existing topic: we are discussing useful parts of a handbook, and particularly useful introduces the next example. The end is a convenient place to name a new or long subject. Inversion thus helps organize information rather than merely making a sentence solemn.

Equally, also, no less and comparative phrases need a clear connection with the preceding idea. Do not insert equally just to sound more complex: the reader must understand what the new quality is being compared with. Not every example necessarily conveys new information or strong emotion; assess the particular paragraph.

The short examples are useful. Equally useful is the index of common errors.

The short examples are useful. Equally useful is the index of common errors.

The second sentence continues the discussion of usefulness and adds a new element: the index.

Several features of the room were visible from the doorway. Particularly striking was the narrow window above the fireplace.

Several features of the room were visible from the doorway. Particularly striking was the narrow window above the fireplace.

The description moves from an overview to a specific detail. Literary expressiveness is possible here, but the sentence does not express nostalgia.

6. Preserve facts, negation and degree of certainty

Gone are the days… means that the named situation belongs to the past. Word order alone does not tell us whether the writer misses it, welcomes the changes or simply states them. Emotion is supplied by the wider context.

Rearrangement does not permit removing not, only, may, a comparison or a subject modifier. Not yet clear are the reasons… does not mean that the reasons are already clear. In a more complex pattern with a modal verb, keep the whole verb phrase before the subject, such as may be; may requires the base form be, not is. If this inversion overburdens the sentence, ordinary word order is a fully valid stylistic alternative.

Gone are the days when every booking required a phone call.

Gone are the days when every booking required a phone call.

A phone call is no longer required for every booking. This does not claim that telephone bookings no longer exist at all.

Not yet clear are the reasons for the delay.

Not yet clear are the reasons for the delay.

Not yet applies to clear: the state of clarity has not been reached. Reasons remains a plural subject.

Particularly useful may be the advice from local residents.

Particularly useful may be the advice from local residents.

May be preserves possibility rather than certainty. The neutral alternative The advice from local residents may be particularly useful conveys the same cautious evaluation.

7. A different order can be correct

The room was quiet uses ordinary word order; Quiet was the room is more stylistically expressive. Both sentences are grammatical. If a task specifically asks for complement–verb–subject, the first does not fulfil the requested technique, but that does not make it a language error.

Fronting without inversion is also possible: A good listener she is. The complement comes first here, but she remains before is. This is another complement–subject–verb pattern, often contrastive or expressive. Do not turn our exercise rule into a universal law claiming that every initial complement requires V–S.

Likewise, do not replace the target construction with the cleft sentence It was the room that was quiet or spatial inversion Near the door stood a chair. They may be appropriate and grammatical, but they organize the utterance differently.

Quiet was the room after the visitors had left.

Quiet was the room after the visitors had left.

This is the target order: the quality quiet, the linking verb was, the subject the room. Neutral The room was quiet… is also correct.

A good listener she is, but she rarely offers advice.

A good listener she is, but she rarely offers advice.

A good listener is a fronted complement; she is has ordinary subject–linking-verb order. The sentence is grammatical, but it is not the full inversion of this lesson.

8. When to choose this technique

In a report, review, lecture or description, one well-motivated inversion can highlight an important point. In a short everyday message, ordinary word order often sounds more natural. C2 means control over your choice, not a requirement to make every sentence literary.

Before writing, identify the bearer of the quality, the quality itself and the reason for placing it first. After rearrangement, check number, tense and preservation of facts. Read the sentence together with the preceding one: is equally clear, has the new subject been lost, and is this particular emphasis needed?

Also available are two large-print guides.

Also available are two large-print guides.

After other materials have been mentioned, this is a concise addition of information. The sentence need not sound tragic or solemn.

Lucky is the traveller who finds such a welcome.

Lucky is the traveller who finds such a welcome.

An aphoristic, literary tone is possible here. It can suit an essay but is not obligatory in a message about arriving.

Common mistakes

Incorrect:Gone is the days when tickets cost a pound.

Correct:Gone are the days when tickets cost a pound.

The subject days is plural, so are is required. Fronted gone does not remove agreement.

Incorrect:Particularly important are the quality of the recordings.

Correct:Particularly important is the quality of the recordings.

The head of the subject is quality, singular. Do not make the linking verb agree with recordings inside the dependent phrase.

Incorrect:Equally valuable was the comments from readers.

Correct:Equally valuable were the comments from readers.

The past statement concerns several comments: replace was with were without changing the tense.

Incorrect:Particularly useful may is the advice from local residents.

Correct:Particularly useful may be the advice from local residents.

After the modal may, use be. Do not remove may: that would turn possible usefulness into asserted usefulness.
