1. Parallel structure helps readers compare
Parallelism is a noticeable similarity in the structure of related elements. When several goals, properties, or arguments are presented according to a parallel pattern, readers can see their relationship more easily. Individual words, phrases, or entire parts of a sentence can be parallel.
First, identify the units that are genuinely being compared. In a sentence about goals, these may be two infinitive groups, not all the words between the commas. Equal length, identical words, and even identical endings do not by themselves define parallelism.
The review examines the evidence, questions the assumptions, and identifies the remaining risks.
The review examines the evidence, questions the assumptions, and identifies the remaining risks.
The three verb groups share the subject the review. The last one is longer, but this does not destroy the parallel structure.
The proposal is modest in cost and ambitious in scope.
The proposal is modest in cost and ambitious in scope.
The pattern adjective + prepositional group is repeated, not the specific words. The contrast in meaning here adds to the parallelism.
2. A shared framework: what does not need to be repeated
A shared element can apply to the entire series. After a modal verb, coordinated verbs remain in the base form. In a series of infinitives, to can appear before every verb or only before the first: both patterns are standard.
Repeating to can sometimes make the boundaries of long groups clearer. Its absence before the second verb does not make that verb incorrect. Check which element applies to the series instead of simply counting repetitions.
aim to [V + …] and [V + …] / aim [to V + …] and [to V + …]
- verb / V —
- A word for an action or state, such as work or be. The pattern determines its form.
The team aims to reduce delays and improve access.
The team aims to reduce delays and improve access.
To is shared by reduce and improve. The version to reduce delays and to improve access is also correct.
Applicants can upload a document or request an appointment.
Applicants can upload a document or request an appointment.
Can applies to both possible actions. After it, upload and request are required, not requests.
3. A genuine error: an element does not fit the construction
Some problems are not matters of taste. If a shared construction requires a particular form, every dependent element must fit it. For example, in the meaning of an activity, involve takes an -ing form, while after can the base form of the verb is required.
A useful check is to place each element separately into its framework. This is a practical guide, not a universal theorem for every complex case of coordination. In the ordinary description of properties, both adjectives in The explanation is clear and precise can complement is; the adverb precisely does not perform that role here.
The role involves checking invoices and answering queries.
The role involves checking invoices and answering queries.
Checking and answering denote activities after involves. The version involves to answer does not fit this verb.
The explanation is clear, concise, and precise.
The explanation is clear, concise, and precise.
All three properties describe explanation. Precisely would mean the manner of an action, but there is no relevant action in this framework.
4. Different forms do not always mean ungrammaticality
English allows coordinated elements from different grammatical categories in an appropriate context. The speaker was confident and in control is a natural sentence, although confident is an adjective and in control is a prepositional group. Syntactic function and meaning are more important than a mechanical part-of-speech label.
Stylistic editing can make the rhythm more even, but it does not prove that the original text was ungrammatical. Similarly, She was attentive and answered every question combines two verb groups: was attentive and answered every question. There is no need to turn every sentence into a series of adjectives.
The speaker replied calmly and with patience.
The speaker replied calmly and with patience.
An adverb and a prepositional group naturally describe the manner of replying. Calmly and patiently is a more stylistically symmetrical alternative, not a required grammatical correction.
The adviser was knowledgeable and explained the options clearly.
The adviser was knowledgeable and explained the options clearly.
Was knowledgeable and explained the options clearly are two predicative components with a shared subject. Replacing explained with articulate would not guarantee preserving the fact of a specific explanation.
5. Pairs, lists, and the boundaries of focus
Both … and, either … or, and not … but help show exactly which units are being compared. For clear parallelism, place them before the corresponding groups: both the evidence and the method; either revise the text or withdraw the claim.
When editing, do not shift the boundary of the comparison unnoticed. Not the timetable but the budget negates one object and highlights another. Not reviewing but rewriting compares actions. These are not interchangeable focuses.
We need both reliable evidence and a transparent method.
We need both reliable evidence and a transparent method.
Both and and introduce two noun groups—two necessary components, not two alternatives.
The meeting is about clarification, not about blame.
The meeting is about clarification, not about blame.
The two prepositional groups make the contrast clear. Repeating about is acceptable, but clarification, not blame can also follow a single about.
6. Preserve facts, modality, and agents
A more elegant form does not give you the right to add an agent, a causal relationship, an obligation, or certainty. If the author has not said who checked the data, do not attribute the checking to researchers merely to create an active voice. If the text says may, do not turn a possibility into a fact or an obligation.
A shared subject or repetition of the question word can also change the meaning. One question about a person with two properties is not the same as two questions that different people may answer. Parallelism serves accuracy; it does not replace it.
The data were collected by nurses, and the results were checked by statisticians.
The data were collected by nurses, and the results were checked by statisticians.
The two passive clauses preserve two different groups of agents. They cannot be compressed into Nurses collected the data and checked the results.
Who can translate the leaflet, and who can check the figures?
Who can translate the leaflet, and who can check the figures?
These are two separate requests: the agents may be different. Who can translate the leaflet and check the figures? asks for someone who can perform both tasks.
7. Parallelism, isocolon, and antithesis
Parallelism concerns similarity of structure. Isocolon adds a comparable equality in the length of the elements. Antithesis concerns a contrast between ideas; it often uses parallel structure, but not always. Therefore, these labels are not mutually exclusive answers for every sentence.
A sentence can be parallel without contrasting meanings, and long and short groups can remain parallel without being an isocolon. Instead of guessing one label, ask: what exactly is repeated, and is there an additional feature—contrast or equalized length?
We record complaints and investigate failures in the services on which residents depend.
We record complaints and investigate failures in the services on which residents depend.
The two verb groups are parallel, although the second is much longer. There is no need to call them an isocolon.
The aim is not private gain but public benefit.
The aim is not private gain but public benefit.
Here there are both parallel noun groups and antithesis. The presence of one device does not cancel out the other.
8. An editorial habit for your own language
Before editing, write down the unchangeable facts: who acts, what they do, when, what is negated, and how certain the statement is. Then choose the level of parallelism: words, groups, or sentence parts. Read the result without supplying imaginary omitted words: does every component have grammatical support?
The final check is appropriateness. In a short letter, a compact series is often convenient; in a complex instruction, repeating the subject or to may make reading easier. Do not sacrifice different agents, nuances of meaning, or naturalness merely for the sake of giving sentences the same shape.
Please label each file, record its source, and flag any uncertainty.
Please label each file, record its source, and flag any uncertainty.
The three imperative verb groups give the reader a clear list of actions. Flag uncertainty does not mean eliminating uncertainty—editing must preserve this exact requirement.
We may revise the schedule, but we must preserve the agreed review period.
We may revise the schedule, but we must preserve the agreed review period.
The two clauses are structurally parallel, although the modal verbs differ: possibility and obligation should not be artificially aligned.
Common mistakes
Incorrect:The summary is accurate, concise, and persuasively.
Correct:The summary is accurate, concise, and persuasive.
Persuasively is an adverb of manner; it does not name a property of summary in this framework with is. We change only the form of the third property.
Incorrect:The post involves assessing applications and to interview candidates.
Correct:The post involves assessing applications and interviewing candidates.
In this meaning, involves requires the name of an activity in the -ing form; to interview does not fit the shared framework.
Incorrect:Residents can inspect the plans and submits comments.
Correct:Residents can inspect the plans and submit comments.
Can applies to both actions. After a modal verb, the base form submit without -s is required.
Incorrect:By testing the instructions and revise the examples, we improved the guide.
Correct:By testing the instructions and revising the examples, we improved the guide.
The introductory by-group names the means of improving the guide: testing and revising. The base form revise cannot be the second complement of by; placing the whole group before the main clause removes the possibility of analyzing it as two separate predicates.
